Essaouira is one of Morocco’s most relaxed coastal cities, with a whitewashed medina, a working fishing harbor and a long sandy beach on the Atlantic. Its pace is gentler than Marrakech or Fez, which makes it an easy choice for a short escape.
Getting there
Essaouira is roughly a 2.5 to 3 hour journey from Marrakech by bus or car. Check current schedules before you travel.
Day 1: Medina and harbor
Start in the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wander its narrow lanes of small shops, cafés and art galleries. In the afternoon, head to the harbor to watch the blue fishing boats and enjoy grilled fresh fish. Finish on the old ramparts for sunset over the Atlantic.
Day 2: Beach and slower streets
Take a morning walk along the beach, then explore the quieter streets away from the main square. The area is also known for strong coastal winds, which makes it popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Why Essaouira works for a weekend
The city feels lively without being overwhelming, and it is especially rewarding for photographers thanks to its blue-and-white boats, weathered walls and dramatic ocean light.
Planning a longer trip?
Essaouira pairs easily with Marrakech and other stops along the Atlantic coast. Whether you’re interested in history, food, photography or simply moving at a slower pace, it makes a rewarding stop.
